We Need to Start Talking about CBN and CBG
CBD is having it’s well deserved moment, and one that we suspect will only grow. However, there are some new developments in the study of other Cannabinoids that are very promising.
CBN – CBN was one of the first Cannabinoids to be discovered, it was first chemically described in 1896 and in literature by 1940. CBN is just now beginning to be better understood. CBN is present in fresh Cannabis and Hemp flower in trace amounts, however, the bulk of it is produced when Cannabis ages and occurs from the oxygenation and decomposition of THC. Once THC has oxidized to CBN, it is either non-psychoactive or very mildly psychoactive however, very sedating.
For many years most people believed CBN to be a waste by-product. However, connesiours would often age their Cannabis for the added sedative effects. A study in 2017 by Steep Hill labs revealed CBN as the most sedative of all cannabinoids. The discovery led to a renewed interest in the therapeutic effects of CBN and its role in regulating the endocannabinoid system.
With the recent revelations about CBN and its sedative properties, several companies have began isolating CBN for testing and as an additive to CBD products – an outright win for those of us with anxiety and sleep disorders.
Studies are showing other promising properties of CBN, such as treating Glaucoma, similar pain reduction benefits as THC, and potentially fighting free radicals in the bloodstream.
CBG – CBG is the “parent” of CBD and THC. Specific enzymes in the plant break down CBG to acids, once heat and ultraviolet light hit these acids THC and CBD are formed. However, both Cannabis and Hemp products retain small amounts of CBG.
Breeders are working on strains that are higher in CBG, and scientists are finding the perfect time to extract it from the plant. Early research has found promising outcomes in Cancer, Irritable Bowel, and Crohn’s disease, to name a few.
So, what does all of this mean? Until now, CBN and CBG have not been recognized as “big players,” but studies are showing that this is not the case. They also play a large role in the entourage effect, and this leads to their importance in CBD products.
We have been eagerly awaiting products that test for both CBN and CBG, and are excited by their potential. Bloom Farms is the first of these products that we are carrying and more are on their way.
There is much more to come, so stay tuned!
take care of you,
